Having the same problem right now. Stupid thunderstorms are glitching my power.
Hey everyone, here to report that I won't be on the server for the next 10 days or so. I'll be on a summer vacation, taking respite from the addictiveness of the computer and Minecraft, so I won't be near any computer technology 'till I get back. I wish you all a good time on the server, and I hope everything remains calm and the server does well while I'm away. See you all in 10 days!

Have a great time, Yoga! It does a person good to get away from technology from time to time.

I like the basis of the idea however I have one overlying issue: If players do not want to participate they have no choice as their server is not the same anymore, so we have these people to account for and all the new players who could join or attempt to join in that period which would give them the wrong idea about the server we have.
Back again with another server thingy. This time, an issue and suggestion to fix this issue. As many people can back me up in support with, there has been a increasing amount of "trolls" and griefers, trying to ruin peoples enjoyment and fun on the server. This can go from causing disturbances with swearing, to completely destroying homes that our most faithful of server builders, put time into. Now my suggestion for this issue is this. Firstly I think we should consider a plugin that auto-kicks someone who swears. If the swear say 3 times and are kicked then the next swearing is a ban. Next suggestion is along with the first one we should possibly have either a reduction in sponge prices OR a new protection method altogether. Now lets say these are all too much of a hassle then we should highly consider whitelisting the server so people can apply and if they seem genuine time can be taken to consider letting them join or doing a background check on their server reputation history (I've heard about one of these services that logs people's past "crimes" on other servers registered to the service). Anyway, that is all (again).

I think the auto kick for swearing, the reduced prices of sponges and other protection methods are great. White listing the server however is something I am unsure of. 1. It would clog up the forums 2. White listing is something that puts people off servers 3. We have quite alot of players and white listing all of them might take a while (From past experiences you can only whitelist one person, then restart, etc.)

I agree, Fluffy will be left to manage le server by himself while all other staff and helpful players will be in the competition. Its a nice idea, but I think it would ruin the server on the aspect of griefs and trolls.

If a plugin existed that actually worked, I'd be all for it. Users are smart, though. If I get warned about swearing by a plugin, I'll just insert a space in the middle of a word, or add a period. People will find ways around it, and it will just irritate us even more. Staff will deal with those people, and if no staff is on, please screenshot so we can get them when we see it.
I can see both sides on the white-list. White-listing would immediately improve our userbase, at the severe cost of user numbers. If I'm looking for servers, I won't even consider one where I have to apply. But maybe I'm in the minority on this one. To Dozy's point, it would help our server quite a bit if we made candidates post their request on the forum, as every forum post helps push our server to the top of the search engines in MCF.
An alternative to whitelisting I see some servers do is a greylist type thing, where everyone can come on to the server, but new members play on a separate world. Once you've played on that world long enough, admins can decide if you're a good fit(or if you're just a jerk) and be greylisted to the main world, where only greylisted people play. We could even make it so the Builder rank or lower plays on the separate world, or maybe the first world is creative and if someone builds a nice-enough building they're in. Anyway, there's a lot of options, and I see several advantages and disadvantages to this method.
Advantages
People can join the server on a whim
People still have playing experience even if they aren't greylisted
People have a feel for how the server is and if they fit, if they don't they can just leave
Any griefers can only grief stuff that is a few days old, by that time the builder either moved on or got into the separate world
If the filtration method is good enough, protection can be removed
Flexible filtration method -- kindness, building, reaching the End, getting an achievement, etc.
Disadvantages
WORK! The work required by staff is the same, if not more, than using a whitelist(except if we use karma, as I describe below)
People can still be discouraged from playing on the server(but if they are, they probably don't want to play anyway)
Griefers still have something to grief, even if it is useless to
The server needs to handle two worlds(I don't think this is actually a problem, but who knows)
Setup may take a while
If we were to actually use this method, I recommend a karma system for getting people onto the server. Let's set a karma limit of 1000 in order to be greylisted automatically, for instance. Staff can award you karma for good things you did(and it gives players instant feedback to if what they did was appreciated or not), and you automatically gain karma from mining, harvesting, etc. When you're awarded for a good deed, let's say you get 300 karma. Then if you mine 1 stone, you get 0.25 karma. Or if you mine 1 diamond, you get 2 karma. Or maybe if you build a nice house you get 600 karma. You get the idea. Once I got 1000 karma, I get promoted automatically, and I get a command that lets me move between the first and second world, or maybe a warp to the second world.
EDIT: Note that karma can work downwards too. To solve swearing, get a good enough catcher that it catches 50% of swearing and automatically add -2(or subtract 2) karma points. Give admins a command like /karma <player> <reason>, where <reason> is a keyword that if used, subtracts 2 karma. If a player gets below, say, -200 karma, they're banned automatically.
The system needs to be weighted so that the player spends maybe 1 hour-2 hours on the first world(make sure they are dedicated) and then they are brought to the second world. As long as you can't get all your karma from a generator of some sort(like an XP farm or something), this system is nearly bulletproof. Stackoverflow uses karma automatically, and it works for them like a charm. I haven't seen a server that does this, but I think it would be pretty awesome(and I can code a plugin that does do karma).
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Take them with a grain of salt or use them.
EDIT: Karma doesn't have to just apply to greylisting. Maybe after the greylist world only building houses or doing good deeds gets you karma. Would be a good system, because admins don't need to keep track of history, it's all there. Take a look at yeahwh.at.
Hello everyone,
Some of you may know me from tschagg's server. I'm Bachboy44. I realize i've been rude/mean to many of you, and for that I am truly sorry. My Mac's IP is banned, so I can't connect, even with an alt. After Reading through these forums, from start to this post, I have seen this servers creativity. I like the fact that users have input, but there is high emphasis on order. Jaz and Fluffy and the staff, I commend you guys, you've turned this forum into what it should be, a place for questions, suggestions, and general growth of this server. And that is why I humbly ask to be Unbanned. I ask you guys, please, consider giving me a chance. I will not fail you.
Yeah, not fond of whitelisting as I think it'd put more of a workload on the staff and generally people are just telling you what you want to hear, anyway. Griefers and trolls would probably be exactly the type of people to put the effort in, just to get past that line of defence.
It's the same problem you see with filters on forums. Those who think they should be allowed to say what they want soon find ways to circumvent any filter a forum has in place and usually, it's not hard to fool them. Soon, you end up with an ever growing list of words and combinations of spellings/formatting and find yourself simply playing catch up.
In other news - I might be a little absent from the server at some point in the coming week or so. Not that I want to be - my video card is playing silly buggers and the fan on it seems a little temperamental. Currently, it's okaaaaay but I don't want to type too loud for fear that it'll decide that'd I'd rather cook eggs on it than use it to play games. Of course I'd rather not drop notes on another one until the last minute but if I vanish from the face of the internet, you'll know why - I'll be sat waiting for another card to show up.
Spend most of my time on my computer now with one eye on the vidcard util telling me its current temperature and carefully listening for the tell-tale lull in vibrations coming from the pc case that means the fan has stopped working...
What I love about skoardy = even with a sad story, you deliver it in an entertaining way. I hope the video card holds on, or that you are able to replace it without too much trouble/cost. See you soon, hopefully!

MD, thank you for the very well-though-out response to this situation. I really like this idea. My concern with it is: if I'm a user, and have a creative world, what is my incentive to move into the survival world, other than to be able to interact with everyone else? I know that's a big incentive, but we might find that many of the users end up piddling around in the creative world, and we would lose them. It's difficult to find a solution that solves every aspect of this. :/
I just got on today, and I must say, I am very impressed. HT has only been open about 3 months and it's already gone this far. Well, I got my head screwed on right and came here, so you'll see me Ingame and I'll be active on the forums.
It appears each time I log on or interact with this server, HavenTerrace is at risk of being attacked again. I therefore would like to apologise for probably being the one starting Tschagg's rampage by asking nicely for him to stop and this leads me to say that I will be leaving the server until a further time. I don't want to risk ruining the fun of those who are on the server, so till next time; Goodbye friends.
Jim, I don't think that's the cause. Since the server still crashes without you even being on..?

Well, the first world doesn't have to be creative. Maybe the first world people join will be survival, and then members have a survival and creative world. That way, if people want the creative world, they have to go through the first one. And we can add some monetary incentive for becoming a member, like 10,000$ or maybe a diamond pickaxe? There's still lots of different incentives we could add.
